NTW rifle was designed by South African designers Tony Neophytou rifle in the early to mid 1990s, in addition to this he also designed the rifle Shotgun Neostead combat. The first development under the Aerotek, then by Mechem, a division of the group DENEL which then purchased all copyrights of this rifle. NTW began to be used by the South African Defence Force in 1998.
